Summer blast in Boracay

I HAD A BLAST PARTYING A LA KApamilya in La Isla Bora. ABS-CBN’s Entertainment Cable Channels Velvet and Cinema One took the island by storm.

Velvet’s 90210 Beach Prom at Juice Bar Plazoleta made everyone feel like they were 18 all over again. It heightened the excitement for the premier of the new version of the iconic ’90s show Beverly Hills 90210 on May 15.

‘Sweetest couple’

There was a “Sweetest Couple” game where lovers had to outdo each other in the “PDA department.” Jon Avila and Maggie Wilson could have joined in since they seemed quite cozy. Is he courting her? “Maggie and I have been close for many years now,” Jon said. “We have a lot in common and we both have British dads.” What happened to his thwarted romance with Rufa Mae Quinto? “We both got too busy.”

Other celebs at the cool party were Victor Basa, Megan Young, Brent Javier, Krista and Kevin Ranillo, IC Mendoza, Xian Lim and the event’s host, Sarah Meier.

The night’s highlight was the hip fashion show featuring 90210-inspired get-ups. The skimpy outfits reminded me of Krista Ranillo’s tiff with her dad, Matt Ranillo, after portraying daring roles without his consent. “He’s more understanding now and I listen to him more,” she said.

Everyone partied like there was no tomorrow with the pop-hip hop music of DJ Mars Miranda of Embassy Super Club and an open bar all night long. We really painted the island red and Velvet!

Cinema One’s beach-side screening (at the Obama Bar and Grill) of the Elwood Perez ’80s classic “Waikiki,” featuring Alma Moreno, Rio Locsin and Lorna Tolentino, was a rousing success.

‘Waikiki’ remake?

Mother Lily, who produced the film, was enjoying with her daughter Roselle and granddaughter Bridget when I asked her preferred lead actresses in case she decides to do a remake of the movie.

“Marian Rivera, Angel Locsin and Karla Abellana,” she revealed. Jon Avila said he wants to play the character of Ricky Belmonte (Alma’s leading man) because he wants to know how he would look like with a moustache. Hosts were John Lapuz and Kitkat.

Celebs reenacted scenes from “Waikiki” with contestants bringing home cool give-aways. There was also a Limbo Rock contest and Fire Dancers exhibition number.

It’s amazing how an ’80s oeuvre still resonates in the spirit of a new generation of cineastes. Direk Elwood should do more films. Kudos to Cinema One for giving space for local movies that deserve a space in every Filipino’s heart.

Just as I had the time of my life at Velvet Channel and Cinema One’s parties, you can be sure those cable channels will keep you bewitched, entertained and bewildered!
